The basics every sitter needs
Before any trip, your sitter should have the everyday details that keep your pet's day recognizable. Write them down rather than relying on memory or a rushed phone call:
- Feeding — exact amounts, times, and where food and bowls live.
- Medication — if any, with clear instructions on dose and timing.
- Routine — walk times, play, and where your pet sleeps.
- Access — keys, codes, and any quirks like a sticky gate or nervous cat.
- Vet information — your clinic's name and number.
- Your contact details — plus a local backup if you're unreachable.
The details that make the real difference
Beyond the logistics, the small stuff matters. Does your dog only drink from a certain bowl? Does your cat hide when strangers arrive? Is there a spot your dog must not access? These are the details that turn a competent visit into one where your pet genuinely feels at ease.
If your pet has any anxieties—thunder, the doorbell, being left alone—say so. A sitter who knows what to expect can adjust the visit instead of being surprised by it.
Communication while you're away
Agree on how you'll stay in touch before you leave: a daily update, a photo, or a check-in at a set time. Clear expectations on both sides prevent the most common frustration in pet-sitting arrangements—owners wondering how things are going.
Also decide what should happen in an unexpected situation: what counts as urgent, what can wait for a text, and who makes calls if you're out of reach.
Why staying home matters for many pets
Most pets do best in their own space. Familiar smells, their own bed, and the routine they already know reduce stress while you're away—especially for cats and senior dogs, who often struggle most with a change of environment.
Pet sitting with 24/7 service availability is offered throughout Marin County, arranged around your pet's normal routine. If your dog needs a place to stay instead, dog boarding is also available—see our boarding preparation guide for what to bring.
